And Plug Them Into Outread

When I walk down the block and buy a book off teh shelf of a local bookstore they can't tell me shit about what bookshelf I put it on at home.

It’s my book now.

You can’t make me feel guilty about removing DRM restrictions from ebooks I’ve purchased. And DRM is what kept me from plugging my ebooks into Outead. A speed-reading app that flashes words in the center of the screen instead of making you move your eyes left and right.

I can’t read 250wpm without it.

Figured I’d share my process since it took me a second to figure out. This works on Amazon and ebooks.com. It may work on other platforms I didn’t bother looking into because they didn’t apply to me. But I know Apple Books didn’t work with this method.

I. Install Calibre

It looks old as hell and reminds me of Limewire. Which means we’re in the right place. You’ll want to start by downloading Calibre if you don’t have it already. An ebook management and reader tool.

You can find it at:

calibre-ebook.com/download:

No surprises here! Pick your OS and follow the installation wizard to get Calibre on your computer. It’s exclusively a desktop application, so this isn’t something you can knock out on your phone. Unless you’re one of those guys with a desktop OS booted on a handheld. In which case, I’m honored you would stop here for information.

II. Install DeDRM.plugin

Next we’re going to install and setup deDRM.plugin. This is definitely the step with the most sauce. We’re going to use some free software developed by one of our friends on GitHub.

Find the latest release of DeDRM.plugin at:

https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools/releases

You may need to unzip or decompress the downloaded file to get the directory we’ll need for this operation. After we’ve downloaded the DeDRM files we’re headed back to Calibre to install them. In Calibre hit Preferences > Change Calibre Behavior. It’ll lead you to this screen where we’re going to click Plugins.

Once we’re in the Plugins screen we’re headed to the “Load plugin from file” button at the bottom right corner.

Navigate to the unzipped folder you downloaded from GitHub from wherever your downloaded files go, or wherever you moved that folder to after you downloaded it. Once the folder is open it should look like this.

We’re going to install both plugins. DeDRM_Plugin.zip and Obok_plugin.zip are both getting dropped into our Calibre tool to benefit from the most ebook libraries that we can lift DRM from.

Let’s check that the plugins were installed successfully in Calibre. Back on the Plugins screen in the Calibre menu let’s check the box at the top that reads “Show only user installed plugins” and toggle both arrows to see what files are inside.

It should look like this if everything was installed successfully.

III. Drag and drop

Now that everything’s installed on your desktop you can open Calibre anytime and freely drop ebooks into the main window where they’ll automatically have DRM removed. Your last questions might be, where are the ebooks stored? And, where do I get the files for ebooks I’ve already purchased?

Critical User Error

As long as it’s not Apple Books you can download the ereader you’re trying to extract from, and Google the file path for the epub file. Once you’ve found those epub files you can drag them into the main window of Calibre where they’ll automatically have their DRM removed.

Then you can drag the modified epub files from Calibre back to the device you’ll be reading on like an Android or iPhone.

IV. Setup Outread

On iOS you can download Outread for speed-reading. Super useful if you need to cram a lot of reading in, and need help staying focused. It’s not available on Android, but I’m sure you can find another speed-reading app compatible with those devices. You can download the app from:

After it’s installed tap the + icon in the top right corner and select Import File.

Boom hit play, and you’re off to the races.

Digital liberation isn’t possible without media ownership. License subscriptions can be taken away from you. Which isn’t fair if you’ve spent $20 on a book. Especially if you have a vast library of books you’ve spent a fortune on. You have every right to protect your investment.

Libraries like Amazon are known for removing licenses from their library for multiple reasons. 1984 was removed after Amazon discovered that the person uploaded it didn’t have the right to do so. Now everyone that paid for that book from their library has nothing to show for it. All because Amazon didn’t do their due diligence before selling it.

Other users have had their account suspended for unclear reasons locking them out of entire libraries of purchases.

It’s my book now.

With Calibre you can separate your ebook purchases from the walled-garden in your ereaders and back them up to external drives where nobody can tough them. Or you can choose to plug the into your preferred e-reader, like one that supports speed-reading functionality. After all, it’s your book and you should be free to put it on any bookshelf you’d like after paying for it.
